School's out for summer....

Anyone else now singing along with Alice Cooper in their head? I know that I can't be the only person who has an ever-going song list playing in my head, usually brought on by chance moments of recollection. Every year, when the last bell rings, this song runs through my head... and has since I was in school. I don't think that its going to change any time soon either. Even when I was homeschooling the Punk and Peanut, I still got that giddy sense of freedom every year when school ended for the summer break.

As of 1204pm (or thereabouts), our summer officially begun! Punk was a bit disappointed at first since the old principal at his school had made the final day of sixth grade optional (since graduation occurs the day before) but the new principal told them that it was mandatory to go. Poor Punk had spent over half the year dreaming of getting out one day early but in the end, I am pretty sure that he enjoyed getting to see his classmates one last time, getting to see his teacher again, getting to properly say goodbye to the elementary... and getting all geared up to start the junior high with his friends in the fall.

Peanut came out and admitted that she cried yet again this year. She didn't want to leave her fourth grade teacher anymore than she wanted to leave her second or third. She didn't want to say goodbye to her classmates or to think about having to start all over again next year with a new class, a new teacher, a new grade, a new set of standards. But hearing about our plans for the summer definitely helped change all that.

The kids are thrilled to be enrolled in a summer bowling program, a summer skating program and are pretty happy with the summer library club (Punk is thrilled to be going back to the preteen party where as Peanut is insisting that she is never growing up and will remain in the children's program this year... despite the fact that she is now enrolled in the preteen party as well).

We are busy making plans for fishing at the pond, long bike rides to different trails, visits to the nature center and heron breeding grounds. We are looking forward to trips to the beach, the splash pad, and miniature golfing. We are going to try to make sure to spend some time on the driving range again this summer and hitting parks whenever the weather keeps the buggy critters at bay.

We are also planning backyard camp outs, s'more sessions, and eating straight from our garden.

Our summer is booking up fast with friends and family and fun. And I cannot wait to share that with them!
